Cong - site of the Quiet Man


We first visited Ireland in 1976 for a week when we were in Britain. Our English friends lined us up a tour designed for British people - an unbelievable bargain. This included daily bus tours of uneven quality. This was the tour that went the furthest North. It also included Westport.

Gate at Cahirciveen



We made two trips to Cahirciveen because it was the locale for one of the most well-preserved workhouses from the Famine-era. The librarian at the public library, Ms. O'Sullivan managed to secure a promise from the farmer who owned the property that we could enter the gate if we did not try to go inside the workhouse (dangerous).
